What To Do When Cold Sores Are Adding To Holiday Stress

Happy Holidays they say it is. While everyone is jingling and jangling and wishing Santa Claus to town, the stress of getting everything prepared for visits with loved ones or even making an appearance to holiday parties can be daunting. Cold sores can wreak havoc on your body, and in some cases, can cause that dreaded cold sore or fever blister to sprawl across your lip. At first, you feel that tingle, and then in what feels like a matter of minutes, the feeling that entire lip has ballooned up like Rudolph’s nose.

Common cold sores are also known as fever blisters. And while they are a viral infection, stress can be a significant factor to one gracing you with its presence. Anything from the sudden change in environment or weather can contribute to its appearance.

When you feel that first tingle of what might feel like a cold sore, its time to take care of it now. Abreva. Abreva. Abreva.  And, if you don’t believe in the over-the-counter relief therapy, there are some at home remedies you can try.

  1. Ice. Ice will help reduce the swelling, thus reducing the appearance. Be sure to wrap the ice in a towel or damp washcloth, as ice directly on the skin can be harmful.
  2. Oregano Oil. This ancient remedy is used by many to help keep the herpes virus at bay. Apply with a cotton pad or clean towel.
  3. Witch Hazel. Witch Hazel helps keep the area clean and from spreading. It is said to help reduce inflammation and ward off the virus.

No matter what you do for your cold sore, there is no cure. What works for one person, may not work for another.

Cold sores are not fun for anyone, and the outbreak can last for up to two weeks. No fun if you are planning a Christmas smooch with a loved one under the mistletoe. Good news, if you have one now, you have time to heal before your kissing in the New Year.

Merry Kiss-mas!
