Common Household Items May Be The Reason Your Skin Is Screaming At You.

Itchy, irritated skin is annoying, to say the least. Have you discovered a rash out of the blue? Or perhaps noticed puffiness or redness in the middle of the day or upon waking up? The culprit of skin irritation could surprise you. Here are 5 things that could be causing your skin to flare up.

1- Wine

Yes, you heard that right. Wine. While so many of us enjoy having a glass of wine at happy hour with our friends, and we know red wine (in moderation) can be useful for our heart health, too much of it could be causing skin problems. Alcohol dehydrates your body, including your skin. With this comes the possibility of vital nutrients not making its way to your skin cells, thus over time can have long-term effects on skin health. It is always good to practice a ratio of one 8 oz. glass of water for every glass of wine.

2- Laundry Detergent

More and more dermatologists are seeing a rise of allergic skin reactions due to everyday household products such as laundry detergent. Often the culprit can be as simple as fragrance additives versus harsh chemicals. Having a good laundry detergent is vital to skin health, as our clothing and sheets are next to our skin all day and night. Choose a cleanser that is simple yet effective, and be cautious of all the smell-good fragrances.

3- Hand Sanitizer

All too often we reach for a hand sanitizer before or after grocery shopping, touching the nozzle at the gas station, or hugging a kid with a runny nose. We’ve all been there, desperately seeking hand sanitizer to keep us out of harm’s way with germs and viruses. But are we harming ourselves more than protecting our health? Many hand sanitizers have alcohol or cleansing agents that ultimately strip the skin and dry it out. Talking about the flora on our skin that naturally protects against harmful bacteria has not made the “cool” list, so most of us don’t know we are harming our skin.

4- Water

Just as we can over water a flower, we can also over water our skin. If you are taking multiple showers a day or washing your hands excessively, you could actually be self-inducing conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis. Every time you wash your skin, hands, face or body, the pH of your skin is affected, and that ultimately changes your skins ability to function at its best. Over-washing can result in dryness, damage, redness, irritation, and more. Rule of thumb is not to over or under water your skin, and if you are in a position where you are showering multiple times a day, it is best to use products that are pH neutral.

5- Essential Oils

Yes, not exactly what we all want to hear, yet essential oils could be causing your skin irritation. While there are many therapeutic benefits of essential oils, it comes back to fragrance. Familiar scents such as lavender can be extremely irritating to the skin, especially as we age. Now, this is not an issue for everyone, but if you are wondering why your skin is getting red or itchy and have exhausted all resources and are using essential oils, it is something to consider. There is a rise in dermatological cases involving allergic reactions to botanical oils.
